Conservation Projects

Conservation project

English Heritage not only carries out a wide range of conservation projects at its own sites as part of an ongoing programme to maintain and look after them, but we will also step in to rescue particularly outstanding or unusual buildings that might otherwise be lost.  We are very much the guardians of last resort and only get involved when all other avenues have been explored and failed.  We have a tremendous range of expertise within the organisation and recent rescue projects include restoring one of this country's finest Jacobean mansions, saving the world's first iron framed building and rescuing a family silverware manufactory.

Conservation Principles

Developed through extensive debate and consultation within English Heritage and the wider heritage sector, Conservation Principles sets out English Heritage's over-arching philosophy for conservation at the beginning of the 21st century.

Heritage at Risk

Each year, English Heritage publishes its Heritage at Risk register which provides a snapshot of the overall state of England's heritage as well as highlighting those individual buildings or sites that are facing the greatest pressures and threats.

Visit Grant-Aided Places

Every year English Heritage awards grants to a number of historic places from historic houses and gardens to places of worship to help with the cost of their repair.  As a condition of these grants, the public can visit these places and you can search the database for opening arrangements at properties we have grant-aided in the last year.
